Anupam Agarwal, MD, will step down from his role as Director of the Division of Nephrology, effective October 1, 2021. Dr. Agarwal has provided the Division, the Department of Medicine, and the School of Medicine exemplary leadership in this role for more than 13 years. Together with a consummate faculty, he has built a powerhouse program in academic Nephrology. During his tenure, the Division more than doubled its number of faculty and saw significant growth in NIH funding—currently more than $15 million in annual total costs.

Today, Nephrology boasts some of the largest research and clinical programs in the Department, spanning developments from CRRT, to cellular mechanisms of AKI, to the molecular pathophysiology of hypertension and stress. He has trained a generation of scientists and nephrologists who are transforming the field. During this time, he also led the Department as Interim Chair and Vice-Chair for Research, and the School as Interim Dean and now Executive Vice Dean.

Dr. Agarwal will continue to serve as Executive Vice Dean with expanded responsibilities in the UAB School of Medicine, and he will direct the NIH/NIDDK funded O’Brien Center for Acute Kidney Injury Research. He will also maintain his NIH and VA-funded research programs.

The Department of Medicine will search for a nationally renowned clinician-scientist to succeed Dr. Agarwal and to build on UAB’s extraordinary programs in nephrology and kidney science.
