East Lake
Once a hub for family fun and outdoor recreation, East Lake is reclaiming its original vision.
In 1886, the East Lake Land Company created a neighborhood that offered an escape for locals and a destination for Alabama residents. A key part of this vision was East Lake Park, which included multiple activities for all residents to enjoy.
As personal cars became more common, the park lost some popularity. But in 1917, the City of Birmingham purchased East Lake Park and expanded its recreational offerings, making it one of the largest municipal recreation facilities in Alabama.
Today, Live HealthSmart Alabama is partnering with community members, organizations, and corporate partners to revitalize the East Lake neighborhood.
With just over 3,300 residents, the goal is to get the people of East Lake outside and moving by encouraging a healthy lifestyle they can access right outside their doorstep. These enhancements mark a positive step forward, making East Lake a healthier and more vibrant community.
