Six-Step Process for UAB Leaders in a Crisis Situation

STEP 1
Ensure safety, if needed: Take steps to ensure the immediate safety of the employee in crisis and others in the area (faculty, staff, patients, and/or guests).- If an emergency, call 911 or the UAB Police and Public Safety Emergency Line at 205-934-3535.
- Know where emergency exits are located in case you need to evacuate the area.
- If there is a non-emergency requiring assistance from UAB Police, call UAB Police Dispatch at 205-934-4434.
- As an additional resource, you may contact the Employee Assistance and Counseling Center at 205-934-2281. (After hours, the EACC may be contacted through Emergency Paging at 205-934-3411.)

STEP 2
Remain calm and take steps to de-escalate the situation.- If the situation involves someone who is argumentative, be empathetic, non-judgmental and listen to the individual.
- Respect personal space and keep facial expressions and body language neutral.
- Keep reactions neutral.
- Offer assistance with resolving the concern.

STEP 3
Identify the most closely related issue to the crisis situation and follow the corresponding link below for critical support resources. -
STEP 4
Direct the employee to available resources to assist with their mental health and/or physical health needs. -
STEP 5
Complete any applicable reporting/ notifications to leadership or others with a need to know and any applicable forms. -
STEP 6
Work with Talent Performance & Relations or your HR Consultant to develop appropriate communications and discuss next steps.
