Graduate Faculty membership reflects an individual’s role in graduate education. All appointments are subject to Graduate School approval and periodic review.
Level I
For faculty who contribute to graduate education through teaching and committee service.
- May serve as instructors, course directors, and members of thesis/dissertation committees
- Must hold a terminal degree and a UAB or eligible affiliated appointment
- Does not serve as primary mentor or committee chair
Level II
For faculty who lead graduate training and mentor students.
- May serve as primary mentors and chair thesis/dissertation committees
- Also eligible for all Level I roles (teaching, committee membership)
- Must demonstrate scholarship and readiness to mentor graduate students
- Expected to meet Graduate School mentoring and participation requirements
Ad Hoc
For individuals with limited or temporary involvement in graduate education.
- Cannot serve as primary mentor or committee chair
- Often used for external collaborators or short-term participation
Retired and Emeriti Faculty
Retired or emeritus faculty may continue to contribute to graduate education with approval.
- May serve as committee members or co-chairs
- May continue in roles established prior to retirement
- Cannot newly serve as sole chair after retirement
- Must remain professionally active and receive Graduate School approval
Postdoctoral Trainees
Postdocs are not eligible for Graduate Faculty Status.
