Research and Teaching Interests: Manufacturing Engineering, Syntactic and composite foams, Materials manufacturing
Office Hours: By appointment only
Education:
- Ph.D., New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology
Dr. Gary Gladysz has an interdisciplinary background of materials science and chemical engineering with a Six Sigma Black Belt. He has authored 30+ peered reviewed journal publications and a recent book titled, Voids in Materials: From Unavoidable Defects to Designed Cellular Materials. He has led composite materials research efforts in university, government and industrial settings. Currently, he is a partner/owner in a startup business that focuses on fire suppressing materials and structures. Additionally, he consults for several industrial partners on materials manufacturing, lightweighting, and syntactic & structural foams. He has extensive research experience designing and characterizing fibrous composite materials, ceramic composites, polymers, composite foams, and thin films.
Dr. Gladysz received his PhD from the New Mexico Institute of Mining & Technology where he participated in the NATO Collaborative Program with the German Aerospace Institute (DLR). Since receiving his PhD, he was involved in government research on two separate occasions; with the Department of Energy as a Technical Staff Member at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) and with the Department of Defense (US Army) in Natick, MA. In 2005 he was awarded the LANL Distinguished Performance Group Award for his work leading materials development on the Reliable Replacement Warhead Feasibility Project. While in industry, he led R&D and Quality Departments for Trelleborg Offshore US for 6 years.
Dr. Gladysz has served on funding review boards for Los Alamos National Laboratory, National Science Foundation, ACS, and the Lindbergh Foundation. He has been guest editor on four issues of leading materials science journals, including Journal of Materials Science and Materials Science & Engineering: A. Dr. Gladysz has organized five international conferences/symposia on syntactic foams and composite materials. He started and currently chairs the ECI international conference series on Syntactic & Composites Foams. Dr. Gladysz currently lives near Boston, Massachusetts, USA.
