NSF International Research Experience for Students (2017, 2016, 2015)
New offerings planned for 2019, 2020, and 2021
The UAB Sustainable Smart Cities Research Center was awarded a NSF three-year-grant to develop an international research experience focused on the theme of Sustainable Green Building Design and Construction. Eight-to-ten UAB students were selected each year to participate in this international research program where the students traveled to Egypt and to a European country each year:
- The Netherlands – 2015
- United Kingdom – 2016
- Germany – 2017

NSF Sustainable Smart Cities International Workshop (2017)
Follow-up planned for 2019
The UAB Sustainable Smart Cities Research Center was awarded a NSF grant to organize a Sustainable Smart Cities International Workshop, which took place in Alexandria, Egypt, on May 2017. The goal of this international workshop was to promote interdisciplinary collaboration and the exchange of knowledge related to advancing sustainable urbanization and smart cities among experts from the United States and from many other parts of the world.

UAB Sustainable Smart Cities Master’s Program (2016)
The Sustainable Smart Cities master’s program was developed in collaboration with our international partner, Staffordshire University (UK), and it consists in a unique professional postgraduate program that provides an inter-disciplinary grounding in the principles, application and key technologies required to develop sustainable smart cities. This international program was launched in the Spring of 2016.
