Applicants to the Ph.D. program should have a bachelor's or master's degree in a field of biomedical engineering or a closely related discipline. Students with undergraduate degrees in the physical sciences, life sciences, or mathematics also will also be considered for admission; however, such students may be required to demonstrate competence in engineering areas usually found in an undergraduate engineering curriculum. In some cases preparatory courses in engineering may be required.

If you earned an MSBME at UAB, admission to the Ph.D. program requires only an endorsement from your Master's Thesis Committee.

Test Scores

Admission to the BME Graduate Program is highly competitive.

• International students should present a score of at least 90 on the TOEFL or a score of 6.5 on the IELTS.
• Typical students would have an undergraduate GPA of 3.5 or greater and have participated in at least one research project while an undergraduate (e.g., laboratory research, senior design projects, etc.)
• GRE is not required, but we will accept GRE scores if the applicant wants to submit them. 

Application and Admission Deadlines

Graduate students are admitted in the fall semester each year. Applications should be submitted through the Graduate School online application portal. Priority application deadline is November 30 and final application deadline is December 31. 

Financial Assistance

Stipends and tuition assistance are available to highly qualified students. Approximately 8-10 students are admitted per year. General information about financing your graduate studies can be found on the UAB Graduate School website.
