Linda C. Lucas became interim provost of UAB in May 2011after serving as dean of the School of Engineering for more than a decade. She was named full provost in 2012, and retired in 2017. Lucas, whose research has focused on the development of biomaterials for orthopedic and dental implants, is a senior scientist in the centers for BioMatrix Engineering & Regenerative Medicine and Metabolic Bone Diseases. She also holds joint appointments in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering and several departments within the School of Dentistry. Lucas was an inaugural member of the Council of the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering and has been president of three international organizations: American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering, Biomedical Engineering Society, and Society for Biomaterials. She is a fellow in the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineers and an international fellow in the Society for Biomaterials. Lucas joined the UAB faculty in 1982 as an assistant professor and was chair of the Department of Biomedical Engineering in 1995 until being named dean in 2000. She and her students have published their work in more than 100 publications and presented at more than 250 scientific meetings. Lucas earned bachelor degrees in mathematics and chemistry from University of Alabama and in engineering from UAB; she also earned master’s degrees in engineering, mathematics, and education plus a doctorate in biomedical engineering from UAB.
