For Vivian Le (DMD Class of 2027), getting involved isn’t just an add-on to dental school. It’s the heart of her UAB experience. From student government to cultural organizations to legislative advocacy, Vivian has found connection, confidence, and community by jumping into the many opportunities UAB School of Dentistry offers.
As a Student Ambassador and active member of several student organizations, she’s seen firsthand how joining a variety of groups helps students build friendships, grow as leaders, and make dental school feel like home.
A bit about you?
Born and raised in Mobile, Alabama. I went to undergrad here at UAB as well, so I've been a Blazer for seven years now.
Why did you choose to pursue dentistry?
I chose dentistry because my cousin’s fiancé mentioned it to me. He noticed I was good with my hands—I love arts and crafts and played instruments growing up. After that, I started seeing dentistry as a career where art meets science. It feels like a hobby when I’m here, and I genuinely have fun working with my hands.
Why did you choose UAB School of Dentistry?
I chose UAB because I had family and friends who went through the program and spoke highly of it. I also wanted the hands-on experience UAB is known for. Since I went to undergrad here, I already knew the faculty and staff take education seriously. I’ve had a lot of mentors, and I’ve learned so much from other students. UAB also has higher clinical requirements, and I know that will help prepare me well for my future career.
What student organizations are you involved in?
One thing I love about UAB is how easy it is to get involved in whatever interests you. Want to explore a specialty? There’s a club for that. Want something social? We have that too.
I’m a SOD Student Ambassador, so I give tours to prospective students after interviews and answer any questions they might have. I’m involved in several student organizations including the American Association of Women Dentists (AAWD) UAB chapter, the Dental Business Club, and others.
Student Government Association (SGA)
I’ve really enjoyed being part of SGA. This year, I’m serving as our chapter president, and it’s been so rewarding. My favorite part is planning events everyone looks forward to after a long day in clinic. Our biggest event is Mandiball—basically dental school prom. It’s the perfect chance to meet people from other classes and take a break. We also host the chili cook-off, the Crawfish Boil, and class events like our holiday parties.
ASDA (American Student Dental Association)
ASDA is one of my favorite organizations. It’s big, and there are so many subgroups you can join. Through ASDA, I’ve had the chance to learn about dental policy and advocacy. I’ve attended events in Montgomery and Washington, D.C., where students can discuss issues important to the profession.
Asian Dental Student Organization (ADSO)
I’m also part of ADSO, and it’s been so fun. Like all our organizations it’s open to all students, and I’ve especially learned so much about different cultures by being part of ADSO. This year we hosted a Lunar Festival celebrating Chinese culture and a Diwali event celebrating Indian culture. I love the community ADSO has created. Everyone is so open-minded.
What is your favorite thing about UAB School of Dentistry?
My favorite thing about our school is the faculty and students I’ve met. Every faculty and staff member has been such a helping hand. And the students—both my classmates and upperclassmen—have helped me in tremendous ways. Everyone is here to support you.
Has any faculty or staff member made an impact?
All the faculty in PCD have done such a great job preparing me for clinic. Now that I’m a D3, I look back and realize how much they helped me feel ready to work with real patients.
Your favorite memory or event so far?
ASDA Field Day. The Class of 2027 has won three years in a row! It’s exciting and brings all the classes together for some friendly competition.
What’s the most important thing you’ve learned?
Not to be too hard on yourself. Dental school is a place for learning, and you learn something new every single day. If we already knew how to do everything, we wouldn’t be here. When you make a mistake, just learn from it and move on.
What are you looking forward to this year and next?
All the events we have coming up—especially Mandiball—and seeing everyone come together to have a good time.
Advice for future or prospective students?
Relax and take everything one day at a time. Everything happens for a reason. I’ve spent a lot of time stressing about the future, and sometimes it’s just not worth it. Things will fall into place when they’re supposed to.
Anything else you’d like to add?
Just go for it! Join clubs, get involved, meet new people, and see what the school has to offer. It’s a great way to learn and to have a good time.
