The Undergraduate Certificate in Public History is designed to provide students with a foundation in public history methods and launch them into related careers.
The Undergraduate Certificate in Public History will train students in:
- displaying the works of other historians to a larger audience
- devising and leading community discussions about the past
- preserving, dedicating, and memorializing historical neighborhoods and buildings
- producing films, documents, or memorial projects that reach non-academic audiences
- developing a proficiency in written and oral presentation skills to communicate evidence and data to academic as well as non-academic audiences.
Certificate Requirements
To obtain the Undergraduate Certificate in Public History, students must complete 15 hours of coursework, including 9 hours of required courses and 6 hours of electives. Students must obtain a grade of at least B in any course used to satisfy the certificate requirements.
Twelve of the 15 required credit hours must be earned at UAB, and 12 of the credits must be at the 300-level or above. Students cannot take all courses from the Department of History. They must also take a course from at least one other department or program, including English, Anthropology, Political Science and Public Administration, and/or Art and Art History. Any of the history (HY) or digital and community studies (DCS) courses may be used to satisfy the History B.A. requirements. The certificate is open to all majors.
