Welcome to the UAB Department of Chemistry Graduate Program. We offer Ph.D. degrees in inorganic, organic, polymer, physical, analytical, bioanalytical, and biophysical chemistry. UAB is one of the world’s leading teaching and research medical centers, and the department maintains strong ties with the biomedical research community within the School of Medicine. This makes our program uniquely multidisciplinary.
Numerous Research and Training Opportunities
Our students receive training in cutting edge technologies in every discipline of chemistry. The department is home to the Central Alabama High Field NMR Facility, Center for Chemical Synthesis and Analysis, Mass Spectrometry Laboratory, X-Ray Crystallography Laboratory, Biophysical Spectroscopy Laboratory, and Bioenergetics Laboratory.
Moreover, researchers within the department have access to many additional UAB-wide basic chemical science resources, including advanced mass spectrometry, proteomics, genomics, and high-resolution imaging facilities, the Center for Biophysical Sciences and Engineering, and the Center for Nanoscale Materials and Integration to name only a few. Students interested in translational biomedical sciences can interact with researchers in such groups as the O'Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center, Center for AIDS Research, and the Center for Free Radical Biology in the School of Medicine.
Post-Docs and Careers
On the way towards completion of their degrees, doctoral candidates are equipped with the skill set needed to enter into a variety of careers. Recent graduates have received postdoctoral positions at Texas A&M, Washington University in St. Louis, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Emory, University of Pennsylvania, University of Michigan and Tulane, to name a few. UAB chemistry graduates have obtained faculty positions at colleges and universities such as Middle Tennessee State and Birmingham Southern College. Other graduates have secured positions at the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences, BioCryst, ExxonMobil, Avanti, Evonik, Abbvie and Southern Research Institute, among others.
