From Feb. 23–26, students across the University of Alabama at Birmingham explored the power of storytelling, free expression and media literacy during Student Media Week. Hosted by UAB Student Media, the event featured interactive experiences such as a Free Speech Wall, podcast pitch sessions, film screenings, professional panels and discussions on student press freedom.
The programs were designed to give students hands-on opportunities to explore media creation while engaging in dialogue about the role of journalism and communication in society.
The week encouraged students to think critically about the information they consume while building skills in communication, creativity and civic engagement — key components of career readiness and student success. Programs also promoted connection and belonging, offering spaces for students to share ideas, collaborate across disciplines and discover opportunities within campus media organizations.
By highlighting the role of student voices in shaping campus culture and society, Student Media Week reinforced Student Affairs’ commitment to empowering students, supporting informed citizenship and preparing Blazers to lead in an increasingly media-driven world.
