National Student Employment Week

The Division of Student Affairs and the UAB Career Center will celebrate the Good Work of student employees across campus in recognition of National Student Employment Week, to be held April 12 - 18.

Observed annually by colleges and universities nationwide, National Student Employment Week, created by the National Student Employment Association (NSEA), recognizes the vital role student employees play on and off campus while gaining meaningful professional experience. The purpose of the week is to increase awareness and acknowledge students who work while attending college.

Throughout the week, departments will highlight the impact of student employees who contribute to programs, services and initiatives that enhance the campus community. From supporting daily operations to providing essential services for students and visitors, student employees help power the work in Student Affairs.

“Student employees bring energy, creativity, and leadership to their workplaces every day,” said Dr. Lauren Cotant, director of the UAB Career Center. “The Good Work campaign celebrates the campus and community impact of our working students while highlighting the skills, connections, and confidence they are building for their futures.”

Student employment provides opportunities for students to develop transferable skills such as communication, teamwork, problem-solving and leadership. Supervisors also play an important role in mentoring students and creating meaningful learning experiences within the workplace.

How to Participate

Students, supervisors, departments and local employers are encouraged to join the celebration by recognizing the impact of student employees throughout the week.

Supervisors and departments can participate by:

  • Highlighting student employees on social media
  • Sharing student spotlights that recognize individual contributions
  • Posting messages of appreciation for student staff members
  • Recognizing students who demonstrate leadership, initiative and professionalism in the workplace

Student employees can participate by:

  • Sharing their student employment experiences on social media
  • Reflecting on the skills they have gained through their job
  • Thanking supervisors or mentors who have supported their growth
  • Celebrating fellow student employees who contribute to campus and community success

Participants are encouraged to share their stories and recognition posts throughout the week to help spotlight the important role student employees play across campus. To help employers and students join the celebration, the Good Work Week social media toolkit is available. It offers downloadable graphics, social media frames and sample captions designed for easy sharing across social platforms.

Good Work aims to honor the dedication and impact of student employees while reinforcing the role student employment plays in preparing students for success beyond graduation.
