Staff Excellence

HSC DSS Award The Hill Student Center at the University of Alabama at Birmingham continues to serve as the central hub of student activity, supported daily by an operations team dedicated to providing a safe, welcoming and accessible environment for the campus community.

Often referred to as the university’s “campus living room,” the facility hosts thousands of visitors each day for studying, dining, meetings and student organization activities. The Operations Team recently coordinated two major institutional events — the center’s 10th anniversary celebration and the annual Board of Trustees meeting — managing complex logistics that highlighted the building and the Division of Student Affairs.

The team also received the Disability Support Services Outstanding Staff Recognition Award for Fall 2025 for its partnership in hosting sensory rooms during Finals Week, providing additional midterm and final exam testing space, and ensuring accessibility for all visitors.

In addition to large-scale events, professional and student staff maintain the building for daily use, campus tours and high student traffic. The center houses numerous student-serving offices, meeting venues and dining locations, making operational excellence critical to student engagement and success.

Guided by a mission to enhance the student experience through high-quality facilities and services, the Hill Student Center Operations team fosters connection, belonging and community across campus while supporting the university’s broader goals for student success.
