The Commission on the Status of Professional Staff (CSPS) at the University of Alabama at Birmingham continues to strengthen employees' professional development through initiatives focused on wellbeing and community engagement.
During its recent February meeting, the Commission highlighted resources designed to support faculty and staff both professionally and personally. Representatives from the Employee Assistance and Counseling Center (EACC) shared information on mental health services, caregiving support and Healthy Aging programs. This month, the Senior Care Authority was in the spotlight. The Senior Care Authority provides guidance on eldercare planning, housing options and family support.
The committee — which includes Rebecca Kennedy, Ph.D., assistant vice president for Student Health & Wellbeing, and Shawra Rainer, Community Standards and Student Accountability director — operates under UAB's commitment to employee development and wellbeing. Members emphasized the importance of accessible resources, work-life balance and a culture of care within the university community.
Dedicated to advancing professional success across campus and beyond, the Commission promotes leadership development, inclusion and an improved workplace climate. Its efforts extend to the broader community through initiatives such as the annual "Suits for Success" clothing drive, which supports the North Central YWCA's My Sister's Closet by providing professional attire to individuals preparing for employment.
Through partnerships, educational programs and advocacy, the Commission on the Status of Professional Staff works to enhance career growth, strengthen organizational effectiveness and foster a supportive environment for all employees at UAB.
The committee was previously the Commission on the Status of Women.
