The LGHO is a partnership between the schools of Social & Behavioral Sciences and Public Health. The lab was initially developed in summer 2006 by Sarah Parcak, Ph.D., and Tennant McWilliams, Ph.D. The potential for a remote sensing lab, in particular the medical and health research possibilities, evolved into a partnership with Max Michael, M.D., dean of the School of Public Health.

With the support of Chris Taylor, Ph.D., chair of Anthropology, and Richard Marchase, Ph.D., vice president of Research and Economic Development, the LGHO is an official research center with a primary focus on medical and health-based applications for satellite remote sensing.

Parcak directs the laboratory.
