The inappropriate use of antibiotics in emergency departments persists even as concerns about antibiotic resistance continue to mount, says a UAB study published online in the journal Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy.

UAB has launched UAB Weight Loss Medicine, the only program in the Southeast to offer a multidisciplinary, medical approach to weight management, to address a consistent rise in the regional rates of obesity, diabetes and hypertension.

The UAB Philosophy Department will lead public discussions on life's big questions. Assistant Professor Josh May will lead the discussion to be held at 6 p.m. Jan. 28 in the Spencers Honors House. For each discussion, a member of the department will start things off with a 15-minute presentation of the topic to be followed by an open discussion. Direct questions to Kevin McCain, Ph.D.
It is not uncommon for prison inmates to claim that a spiritual experience has changed their nature and made them a better person. Kent Kerley, Ph.D., associate professor in the  Department of Justice Sciences, has heard these stories and examined religion-based programs to discover the effect they have on inmates who are still imprisoned. His findings will be published next month in his book, “Religious Faith in Correctional Contexts.”

Erik Roberson, M.D., Ph.D., and Andrew West, Ph.D., have been named co-directors of UAB's Center for Neurodegeneration and Experimental Therapeutics, which promotes the discovery, development and clinical application of novel treatments for these disorders
James Allen Pittman Jr., M.D., who began his career here as a medical resident in 1956 and came to be considered a principal architect of the School of Medicine, passed away Jan. 12.  "He is one of the great people who, through his unwavering dedication, helped propel UAB’s growth into an institution that can and does change the world for the better,” said UAB President Ray Watts, M.D.
This week, polar research scientist and biology Professor Charles Amsler, Ph.D., did something no other UAB professor has done: He took a selfie at the South Pole.
Amsler, who is co-director of UAB's research in Antarctica, also has been manager for the Antarctic organisms and ecosystems program at the National Science Foundation since June 2013. He is in Antarctica reviewing research support facilities and science programs under his management at NSF.
