UAB’s Alys Stephens Center presents summer drama camps for kids

UAB’s Alys Stephens Center will present three sessions of its summer drama camp, “Kids on Stage,” for children ages 7-18 during June and July 2011.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - UAB's Alys Stephens Center will present three sessions of its summer drama camp, "Kids on Stage," for children ages 7-18 during June and July 2011.

The camps are part of the Alys Stephens Center's ArtPlay education and outreach initiative. Each camp will be held in the Alys Stephens Center's beautiful, new ArtPlay education facility at 1006 19th St. South during the first week; the camp will be conducted onstage in the Alys Stephens Center Sirote Theatre, 1200 10th Ave. South, during the second week.

"Kids on Stage" drama camp provides young actors an opportunity to experience the wonder and detail of theater performance. Campers will be introduced to many aspects of theater, including theater games, improvisation, warm-ups, concentration exercises, voice and diction, terminology, acting and stage production. Each camp will end with a full-scale production produced in its entirety by the campers. Admission to each camp's final show is free and open to parents, family and friends. ArtPlay teaching artists Jennifer Salvant and Alicia Johnson will direct the summer drama camps.

The first two sessions are for campers ages 7-12. The first session is Disney's "The Jungle Book, Kids," June 6-17, 2011. The second session is Disney's "Sleeping Beauty, Kids," June 20-July 1.

The third session, for students ages 12-18, is Disney's "High School Musical, Jr.," July 11-22.

Camp hours are 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Monday-Friday, with pre- and post-camp care options for working parents. The cost for each two-week camp is $350. Campers should bring their lunch and snack each day. For information or to register, visit www.artplayasc.org or call 205-975-4769.
