Researchers at the University of Alabama, Birmingham studied more than 2,500 participants between the ages of 45 and 84 at the start of the study in July 2000. About 28 percent of the women reported early menopause - 446 of them had natural menopause, and 247 had surgical menopause. Researchers followed up with the participants to find out whether they had a cardiovascular event, including a heart attack, nonfatal cardiac arrest, angina, a stroke or death due to stroke, heart attack or other cardiovascular disease.

Researcher Despina Stavrinos suggests the state launch an education campaign that will make distracted driving as socially unacceptable as drunken driving or not wearing a seat belt. Stavrinos also says any texting ban or law against distracted driving must be a primary offense, not a secondary offense. If it's a primary offense, a traffic officer can stop a motorist for just distracted driving.
