BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - High school students can spend their summer at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) to get a head start on their college education or the next school year.
The UAB "Summer in the City" program, scheduled for June 1-Aug. 6, will feature a variety of introductory courses for high school students who are graduating this spring. Students can take everything from English composition, philosophy and history to world, British and American literature, music appreciation, theatre and more.
Individuals can use the courses to satisfy their General Education requirements or toward the completion of a UAB major or minor. The courses offered through the UAB "Summer in the City" program meet transfer requirements at other schools as well.
Students can enroll in UAB "Summer in the City" by visiting the Students Web site at www.uab.edu/students/admissions to download an application and select their classes. High school students who already have enrolled at UAB for the fall 2010 term can simply contact the UAB Office of Undergraduate Admission at 205-934-8221 or at UndergradAdmit@UAB.edu and switch their term of entry from fall to summer.
"We wanted to make taking a summer class as simple as possible, and I think we have accomplished that," said Brent Gage, Ph.D., UAB associate provost for Enrollment Management. "So, now we have made it easy for 2010 high school graduates to get a jump start on college with great courses and great faculty right here at UAB."
Other opportunities for UAB's entering freshmen include the Jumpstart Program that features classes in basic algebra, English, and more. Jumpstart classes are designed to prepare high school graduates for college-level coursework. In addition, the UAB School of Business Summer Bridge Program is a highly competitive program for minority freshmen who plan to pursue business majors and want to get an early start on their coursework.
UAB will hold summer classes for students currently enrolled at UAB during the nine-week session, June 1-Aug. 6 and the 12-week session, May 10-Aug. 6. The university also will hold some classes during the three mini terms, May 10-27, June 1-30 and July 1-Aug. 2.
Additionally, students who are still in middle and high school can choose from several academic summer camps at UAB. Camp subjects include everything from science, computer science, creative writing and foreign languages to music and theatre.
