BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) School of Nursing Professor Marti Rice, Ph.D., has been elected president of the Southern Nursing Research Society (SNRS).
The mission of SNRS, founded in 1986, is to advance nursing research in the Southern region of the United States, the Bahamas and the countries of the Caribbean and Latin America. It works to promote research and the translation of findings to practice; to facilitate the recognition and growth of members as nurse scientists; to foster communication, connection and collaboration among members; to promote the image of nursing as a scientific discipline; and to advance SNRS as a model of organizational excellence.
Rice joined the UAB School of Nursing in 1997 and teaches research methods, statistics and child-health theories and concepts and emerging child-health issues in the Leadership Education in Child Health Nursing (LECHN) program, a grant funded by the Maternal Child Health Bureau (DHHS).
She focuses on bio-behavioral research on anger, stress and self-concept and interventions that target psychological, physiological, behavioral and health outcomes in children. Her research team also is examining interventions to help teachers manage anger and stress, which can affect psychological, physiological and health outcomes.
Rice is a co-investigator on a challenge grant funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Fogarty International Center to offer distance education to international study coordinators and test the effectiveness of the educational offering.
Rice earned her bachelor's degree from Creighton University, her master's from the Medical College of Georgia and her doctorate from Georgia State University.
