BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The University of Alabama System Board of Trustees appointed University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) faculty member Sergey B. Mirov, Ph.D, a University Professor of Physics at its Feb. 5 meeting. The rank University Professor signifies the demonstration of nationally recognized excellence in the conduct of academic duties.
Mirov is an internationally renowned expert in laser physics and winner of special recognition in 2009 for novel middle-infrared active materials, lasers and optical sensors. He received the Snell Premium Award for his input in optoelectronics from the Royal Institute of Electrical Engineers, United Kingdom, in 2004 and was the recipient of the 2009 Caroline P. and Charles W. Ireland Prize for Scholarly Distinction at UAB. He has acquired 38 extramural research grants totaling more than $6.5 million from the National Science Foundation, National Aeronautics and Space Administration, Department of Defense, U.S. Civilian Research and Development Foundation and industry.
Mirov received his Doctor of Philosophy degree in Physics and Mathematics from the P.N. Lebedev Physics Institute USSR Academy of Sciences in 1983. He joined UAB in 1993 and was appointed professor of physics in 1999.
