BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The student chapter of the American Marketing Association (AMA) from the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) School of Business has won the national "30 Minutes with an Entrepreneurial Hero" competition sponsored by the national AMA and the Acton Foundation.

This is the second consecutive year UAB has won the national contest, which featured finalists from colleges such as Penn State University, the University of Nevada-Las Vegas and University of Cincinnati, says the group's faculty adviser, Lauren Beitelspacher, Ph.D.,

UAB AMA members and undergraduate business students James Oliveira of Springville, Morgan Stone of Alabaster and Michael Hyatt of Springville produced the winning project that detailed a 30-minute conversation with Birmingham-area businessman Alan Hunter. The team's project included a self-produced video interview with Hunter.

"The AMA at UAB is dedicated to giving its members opportunities to excel and learn outside the classroom with projects and competitions that test their abilities and ready them for a career in business," Beitelspacher says. "To win the national '30 Minutes with an Entrepreneurial Hero' competition two years in a row is a testament to our students' hard work and the teaching they receive in the UAB School of Business."

The winning team members received a $500 stipend and an additional $250 toward travel and participation in the 2010 AMA Collegiate Conference.

The UAB chapter of the American Marketing Association was named the top UAB student group in 2009. With more than 75 members, it is one of the most viable collegiate AMA groups in the Southeast. Open to students from any UAB school or department, the group focuses on community outreach, service and regular participation in national AMA-sponsored competitions.
