BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The year 2010 marks the 60th Anniversary of the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) School of Nursing, and the school will kick off a year-long celebration with a reception Monday, Jan. 11 at 4 p.m.
The event, to be held at the UAB School of Nursing, will include remarks by UAB President Carol Z. Garrison, Ph.D., an alumnus of the school, and Doreen Harper, Ph.D., dean of the school. As part of the celebration, attendees will be treated to a nursing uniform fashion show to see how the nursing uniform has evolved over the past 60 years, and will be invited to take a six decade history walk and stroll through the school's halls to reflect on its distinguished history and achievements.
The event is free but attendees must RSVP by Jan. 7 by calling 205-975-8936 or emailing dsdavids@uab.edu.
Immediately preceding the kickoff event will be a free continuing education seminar, "Complementary Therapy in Health Care Settings," from 1 to 4 p.m., in the UAB School of Nursing Auditorium, 1701 University Blvd. There will be four sessions, "Therapeutic Value of the Arts in Health Care," "The Role of Music Therapy at UAB Hospital," "Animal-Assisted Therapy in Health Care Settings," and "Complementary Therapy in Palliative Care." Nurses seeking continuing education credit must be present during all four sessions to get 3.1 ABN and 2.58 ANCC contact hours and must bring their ABN license. Attendees also must RSVP for this event by calling 205-975-8936 or emailing dsdavids@uab.edu by Jan. 7.
Throughout the rest of the year, several 60th-anniversary events will bring together alumni from all classes of the nursing school, which was chartered in 1950 as the University of Alabama School of Nursing and in 1967 moved from Tuscaloosa to UAB's campus. These include lectures, a "Cap & Cape Reception" honoring the legacy of diploma nursing at UAB and a finale event honoring 60 visionary alumni leaders from the UAB School of Nursing.
"Over the course of 2010, we will have programs and events honoring the school's achievements, celebrating graduates, sharing memories of the past, and planning for the school's future," Harper said. "I would like to personally invite all alumni to return to Birmingham to reconnect with friends and colleagues and hear from a remarkable group of alumni during our upcoming events."
