BIRIMGHAM, Ala. - Pamela S. Autrey, Ph.D., M.B.A., M.S.N., R.N., administrative director of medical nursing at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Hospital, has been elected president of the Alabama Board of Nursing for 2010. Autrey was appointed to the board by Alabama Gov. Bob Riley in 2007 for a four-year term.

Autrey also was recently elected to the National Council State Boards of Nursing Board of Directors for 2009 to 2011 and completed an elected two-year term on the governance committee of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing.

The past president of the Birmingham Regional Organization of Nurse Leaders, Autrey earned her bachelor's, master's and doctorate from UAB. She also earned an MBA from Jacksonville State University. She has written and presented on numerous nursing and health care policy, leadership and disaster preparedness topics.

Before coming to UAB in 2000, Autrey was a department manager for the medical intensive care unit at the Birmingham Veteran's Affairs Hospital, and emergency room and quality director at Riverview Regional Medical Center in Gadsden. She also has served as a captain in the Army Nurse Corps Reserves.
