BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Department of Music's UAB Piano Series will present Marina Lomazov at 4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 10, 2010, in UAB's Alys Stephens Center, 1200 10th Ave. South. Praised by critics as "a diva of the piano" (Salt Lake City Tribune) and "a mesmerizing risk taker" (Cleveland Plain Dealer), the Ukrainian-American pianist Lomazov has established herself as one of the most passionate and charismatic performers on the concert scene today. Following prizes in the Cleveland International Piano Competition, William Kapell International Piano Competition, Gina Bachauer International Piano Competition and Hilton Head International Piano Competition, Lomazov has performed throughout North and South America, England, France, Germany, Austria, Bulgaria, Ukraine, Russia and Japan.
On the program for her UAB Piano Series performance are works including Schubert's "6 Moments Musicaux" op. 90, Carter Pann's "Six Strokes," William Bolcom's "Serpent's Kiss," Debussy's "Les Images, Book 1" and Chopin's "Andante spianato et Grand Polonaise brilliante."
Lomazov's recent performances include recitals in New York City (Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall, Merkin Hall and Rockefeller University), Chicago, Los Angeles and Boston. As an orchestral soloist, Lomazov has performed with the Boston Pops Orchestra, Rochester Philharmonic, South Carolina Philharmonic, Charleston Symphony, Missouri Chamber Orchestra, Ohio Chamber Orchestra, Graz Höchschulorchester (Austria), Bollington Festival Orchestra (England) and Chernigoff Symphony Orchestra (Ukraine). Most recently Lomazov became a Steinway Artist after a surprise ceremony in June during which she was given a Steinway Grand Piano, an unprecedented and incredibly generous gift from the citizens of Columbia, S.C. Lomazov is an associate professor of piano at the University of South Carolina.
