BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) lecture "An Evening With The Onion" originally scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 7 has been rescheduled due to scheduling conflicts. The event is now planned for 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 8 at the Alys Stephens Center, 1200 10th Ave. South.
The lecture will feature the editors of The Onion: John Krewson, Joe Garden and Kate Palmer.
Tickets for "An Evening With The Onion" are $40 each or $75 per couple and will include a copy of The Onion's latest book, Our Front Pages: 21 Years of Greatness, Virtue and Moral Rectitude From America's Finest News Source, 1988-2008. For tickets, call 205-975-ARTS. Proceeds will benefit scholarships in the UAB departments of English and Communication Studies.
Sports editor Krewson, features editor Garden and editorial manager Palmer will talk about the new book, reflect on The Onion's 21-year history and talk about their favorite news stories.
The Onion, founded in 1988, is known for its sardonic wit and comical, fake headlines that have included "Boy Finds Real Life ET," "Federal Government Wants Subway Safety Oversight" and "Congress Approves $500 Billion for Monument to Human Folly." Its Web site claims a weekly readership of 3 million online at www.theonion.com. The Onion Radio News airs nationwide and The Onion News Network, a 24-hour video news network, was launched in 2007.
In addition, The Onion organization has published several books with titles that include Our Dumb Century, Our Dumb World and Our Dumb World: The Onion's Atlas of Planet Earth.
The event, "An Evening with The Onion" is presented by the UAB English and Communication Studies advisory boards. The event sponsors include Tacala LLC, UAB Films and Novelties Committee, Mental Floss magazine, al.com, Balch & Bingham LLP, Little Professor Book Center and the Alabama Press Association.
