BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Undergraduate researchers from the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) and 25 U.S. colleges and universities will present their research at the UAB Summer Research Expo from 8:30 a.m. to noon Friday, July 24 in Center Court at the UAB Campus Recreation Center, 1501 University Blvd.

Students will have the opportunity to present their research in a professional manner and see what other students are studying, said Christopher W. Reaves, Ph.D., director of the UAB Office for Undergraduate Research. They also gain experience presenting to a diverse audience, which is a mainstay for graduate education and professional life, Reaves said.

Student projects, produced under the guidance of faculty mentors, will examine topics ranging from childhood obesity, rheumatoid arthritis and genetics to hope and depression among caregivers, the biological mechanism leading to Streptococcus pneumonia Type 3 and breast cancer.

Joan Lorden, Ph.D., provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, will present the keynote address at 1 p.m. in Heritage Hall Room 102, 1401 University Blvd.
