Registration is open for the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Department of Music’s Jazz Summit, a three-day intensive course for high school musicians.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The dates have changed and registration is still open for the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Department of Music's Jazz Summit, a three-day intensive course for high school musicians. The summit was originally planned for Feb. 6-8 but will now take place March 6-8.

Students in grades 9-12 proficient in their instruments are encouraged to apply and will be placed by audition. Participants will take part in sectional master classes, rehearsals and concerts, and will be placed in big bands and combos according to their skill and experience.

Registration is $65 and ends Feb. 25. Participants will receive a UAB Jazz Summit medal and T-shirt, dinner Friday night and lunch on Saturday. The summit begins with registration at 4 p.m. Friday, March 6. The summit will feature two free public concerts. Students in the UAB Jazz program will perform at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, March 7, in the UAB Mary Culp Hulsey Recital Hall, 950 13th St. S. All attendees will perform in a final concert at 3 p.m. Sunday, March 8, location to be announced. The concerts are free and open to the public. Call 205-934-6154 for more information.       

Trumpet player Rich Willey is the guest artist and clinician at the UAB Jazz Summit. Willey is a player, composer, author and educator, on the music faculty at the University of North Carolina at Asheville. Clinicians at the summit include Roberts, assistant professor of music at UAB; Gary Wheat, saxophone; Chad Fisher, trombone; Michael Glaser, drums; Matt Wiley, piano; Abraham Becker, bass; and Carlos Pino, guitar.
