BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - An endowed fellowship at the UAB (University of Alabama at Birmingham) Department of Ophthalmology has been named in honor of a long-time Mobile ophthalmologist and eye surgeon. The Matthew W. Mosteller, M.D., Endowed Fellowship in Cornea and External Disease has been established to provide training and education for future cornea specialists in Alabama and the country.
Mosteller, who earned his medical degree at UAB, became the first corneal and refractive surgeon in the Mobile area. He now offers the state-of-the-art Wavefront guided custom LASIK procedure. Mosteller's other area of specialty training and experience revolves around the treatment of cataracts and corneal disease. He is a nationally regarded expert on lamellar cornea transplants for cornea edema and helped establish acceptance of this new procedure and technique.
The fellowship honors Mosteller and his contributions to the field of corneal disease and refractive surgery. Donors supporting the fellowship include the Alabama Eye Bank, Springhill Medical Center, family, friends and grateful patients of Dr. Mosteller.
"The Mosteller Endowed Fellowship recognizes Dr. Mosteller for his invaluable contributions to the treatment of corneal disease," said Marietta Urquhart, member of the Board of Trustees of the University of Alabama System. "It will play an exceedingly important role in UAB's mission to educate and train the next generation of outstanding ophthalmologists for the benefit of the people of Alabama."
