WHAT: |
| Nursing students at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) will donate about 1,000 books to Norwood Elementary School. A group of children from the school will accept the books on behalf of their classmates and will tour the School of the Nursing. The children will also try their hand at taking blood pressures in one of the school’s labs. The project is just one effort by the UAB School of Nursing, a member organization of Birmingham Partners in Education, to help improve education in the Birmingham community. |

| The UAB School of Nursing is the only nursing school participating in the Birmingham Partners in Education program, a program partnering higher education schools with primary and secondary schools in the community.
“The ‘Book in a Bag’ project at Norwood Elementary encourages children to always have a book in their bags to read,” says Barbara Woodring, Ed.D., professor of nursing at UAB. “Our project to donate books to the school will help ensure the children have a good collection of books to chose from. It’s a great way to help the children improve their reading skills.” Nursing students are also involved with other projects at Norwood Elementary, including working with the school’s Boy and Girl Scout troops.
