BIRMINGHAM, AL — Dr. T. Michael Harrington, professor and chair of Family and Community Medicine at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), has earned the Physician’s Recognition Award presented by the American Medical Association. The certificate recognizes physicians who exceed 150 hours of continuing medical education in three years, a requirement of membership in the American Academy of Family Physicians.

The requirement, which is much more than mandated by state licensing boards, ensures physicians are up-to-date on the latest medical technologies, research and techniques applicable to family practice. Physicians acquire credits by attending and presenting at conferences, publishing scientific papers and other learning experiences.

Headquartered in Leawood, Kansas, the Academy is the only medical association devoted solely to primary care. It is one of the largest national medical organizations with more than 93,100 members in 50 states, D.C., Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands and Guam. Founded in 1947, the Academy promotes and maintains high quality standards for family doctors charged with providing continuing comprehensive health care to people of all ages.
