SMITH SELECTED FOR OXFORD ROUNDTABLE
University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) associate professor of English, Virginia Whatley Smith, Ph.D., has been invited to attend a summer session of the Oxford Round Table scheduled for Aug. 8-13 at the University of Oxford in England. The session will be devoted to the topic of women’s leadership. Smith, who teaches African-American, American and African literature, will join a small, select group to discuss women’s rights issues. She will present a paper titled “Saartjie Bartham and Black Women’s Rights: The Hottentot Venus’ Violated Body as Site of Public Policy and Change.” The Oxford Round Table, which first convened in 1989, is a forum in which individuals discuss important educational issues on the local and international level in a collegial, think-tank atmosphere. Past Round Table participants have included U.S. governors, senators, government ministers and representatives from the international education and business communities. Results of the Oxford Round Table deliberations are published and made available to policymakers and academic libraries around the world.
