BIRMINGHAM, AL — The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Department of Communication Studies has established the Annette Shelby Visiting Lecture Series. The lecture series will showcase scholars and professionals in the field of communication studies. The series will be a biennial event.

Shelby, a Georgetown University Professor Emerita, will be the first professional to speak in the series. She will present her lecture at the department’s annual banquet at 7 p.m. Friday, April 9, at the Sheraton Birmingham Hotel, 2101 Richard Arrington Jr. Boulevard North.

Shelby specializes in management communication and focuses her research on theories of influence and corporate advocacy. Shelby’s scholarship and career were honored last May when she was awarded a Doctor of Humanities degree during the spring commencement ceremonies at UAB. The lecture series is supported by donations from alumni and friends of the university.

“Through this lecture series, our students will have the opportunity to meet some of the top scholars and practitioners in the field of communication studies,” said Mark Hickson, Ph.D., chairman of the communication studies department. “We believe the series will serve as an inspiration for our students.”

Shelby began her academic career at the University of Alabama (UA) in 1971. In 1979, she joined the faculty at Georgetown University, where she achieved the notable distinction of being the first woman to become a tenured full professor in the university’s McDonough School of Business.

In 1991, she was named Professor Emerita. She also has been a visiting professor at the University of Pittsburgh and the Helsinki School of Economics. She has directed the Georgetown graduate and undergraduate programs at Oxford University.

Her distinguished career has been recognized by numerous awards, including the Leavey Award for Excellence in Private Enterprise Education, the Danforth Association Program Award for Excellence in Teaching and the Joseph F. LeMoine Award for Undergraduate and Graduate Teaching Excellence.
