BIRMINGHAM, AL — Eli Capilouto, Sc.D., has resigned as dean of UAB's School of Public Health. He will continue to serve as dean until a new dean is appointed.

"The School of Public Health has prospered under Dr. Capilouto's leadership," said Provost Peter V. O'Neil. "Under his guidance, the School has made important contributions to the field of public health and to UAB. We thank him for his tireless efforts and look forward to welcoming him back to the faculty in his new role."

Capilouto was named dean of UAB's School of Public Health in July of 1996, after serving as the school's interim dean for nearly two years.

"The faculty, staff and students of the School have accomplished much during the time I have had the privilege to serve as dean," Capilouto said. "I am deeply grateful for their support and for the support I have enjoyed from the administration of this great university."

Notable accomplishments during Capilouto's tenure as dean include tripling the School’s extramural funding to $21 million; increasing student enrollment by 30 percent; and construction of the School’s new home the Frank and Kathleen Ellis Ryals Building.

Capilouto has had a long association with UAB. He earned graduate degrees in dentistry and public health at UAB and a doctorate in health policy and management from Harvard. From 1989 to 1994 he served in various capacities at UAB, including appointments in UAB's Schools of Dentistry and Public Health, the Center for Aging and the Lister Hill Center for Health Policy.

"Dr. Capilouto is a fine person and a fine leader," said Janet Bronstein, Ph.D., associate professor of public health with UAB's department of health care organization and policy. "He will leave a legacy for us of sound and thoughtful management."

Following a sabbatical, Capilouto will return to the faculty of the School of Public Health.
