BIRMINGHAM, AL — The UAB Department of Music is using a unique enhanced CD of performances by the department’s music ensembles to promote its programs and recruit new students, says Henry Panion III, Ph.D., department chair.
The CD is titled “Soundscape: A Compilation of Music Ensembles.” It was produced by Panion and recorded in the UAB Recording Studio and the Alys Robinson Stephens Performing Arts Center then digitally mixed in the UAB Recording Studio. It features the UAB Jazz Ensemble, directed by Ray Reach; the Chamber Singers and Concert Choir, directed by Jeff Reynolds, D.M.A.; the Gospel Choir, directed by Kevin Turner; the Computer Music Ensemble, directed by Michael Angell, D.M.A.; the Opera Workshop, directed by Rachel Mathes, D.M.A.; and the UAB Marching Blazers, directed by Kenneth Carroll, D.M.A.
What is an enhanced CD? In addition to being an audio CD, it presents users with a multimedia presentation of the various ensembles. It also automatically searches for the Web browser on the user’s computer and connects it to the Department of Music Web site. Once at the department site users can read about department faculty and programs, and students can apply for scholarships on line.
“While it is not unusual for a school to have a recording of their musical ensembles, having an enhanced CD, such as this one, is unusual,” Panion said. “We have used the latest technology in producing this, and it represents the unique access and educational opportunities our students are exposed to. It also showcases the broad range of talent we have in our students and faculty.”
In addition to the traditional programs in music, the department offers unique opportunities in music business and music technology by providing students hands-on experience in every aspect of the music industry, from recording and producing to manufacturing and marketing. There also are internships with leading companies in the entertainment industry available for interested students.
“Soundscape: A Compilation of Music Ensembles” is $8.95 and for sale in the UAB Bookstore in the Hill University Center, 1400 University Boulevard. For more information on the UAB Department of Music call (205) 934-7375.
