BIRMINGHAM, AL — Kelly Sharritt, a UAB (University of Alabama at Birmingham) elementary education major won the recent 2000 Miss UAB Scholarship Pageant.
Sharritt, 21, who is a senior at UAB, competed with other students in the areas of talent, swimsuit, eveningwear and on-stage interview. Sharritt’s platform is A.C.T.S. of Kindness (Advocating Community Service) to highlight the importance of getting children and adults involved in community service. For her talent, Sharritt sang “Hold On” from the popular musical “The Secret Garden.” As the winner, she is eligible to compete in this year’s Miss Alabama pageant.
At UAB, Sharritt is a member of the Marching Blazers Blazerettes Danceline and plays the French horn in the UAB Wind Ensemble. She also is a member of the Golden Key National Honor Society at UAB. She has a 3.5 grade point average and will graduate in the spring of 2001.
Sharritt, a native of Gardendale, is active in her church and community. She plays French horn at her church, First Baptist Church of Gardendale and, sings in the church’s college ensemble. She also has been a volunteer at the women’s shelter Jessie’s Place, tutored children at Gardendale and Powell elementary schools, participated in a school clean-up project sponsored by FOX-6, and traveled on church mission trips to Nicaragua and Buffalo, New York.
Sharritt is the daughter of Ramon C. and Rebecca C. Sharritt and the granddaughter of Dewey and Janice Cato and Paul and Dorothy Sharritt, all of Gardendale.
