BIRMINGHAM, AL — Four local women will be honored as the UAB Outstanding Women for 2004 during a ceremony 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Thursday, March 11, at Bartow Arena, Green and Gold Room, 617 13th Street South.
The UAB Women’s Center and the UAB Women’s Studies Program present the awards annually during Women’s History Month to honor female faculty, staff, students and community leaders who have mentored or served other women, taken a courageous stance, or overcome adversity. Candidates for the award are nominated by Birmingham residents and selected by a committee of university women.
The 2004 winners are: Outstanding Faculty Member Linda Frost, Ph.D.; Outstanding Woman Administrator/Staff Member Charlotte Davis; Outstanding Undergraduate Student Lucy Jones and Outstanding Women in the Community Mary Jones.
Linda Frost, Ph.D., is an associate professor in the Department of English. In addition to teaching and directing the research of women students, Frost edits the magazine PMS poemmemoirstory, a journal of women’s poetry, memoirs and short fiction. She also has been active as a telephone counselor and trainer for the Crisis Center. Frost earned her doctorate in English from the State University of New York at Stony Brook in 1990. She taught at Pennsylvania State University, Wilkes-Barre campus until 1993 when she joined the UAB faculty.
Charlotte Davis is associate director of UAB’s Institutional Review Board. In 2001, Davis was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. Through surgery and therapy, she recovered. Since then, she has been a patient advocate for UAB’s Specialized Program in Research Excellence (SPORE) for ovarian cancer. As a patient advocate, Davis participates in research discussions that lead to the development of clinical trial protocols and national meetings where patient advocates from many institutions deliberate.
Lucy Jones, 21, is a senior majoring in English with a concentration in professional writing and public discourse. She also carries a minor in philosophy of law. Jones is a student in the Honors Program, a 2003 Truman Scholar and an award-winning member of the UAB Mock Trial Team. Jones was a member of Alabama Citizens for Constitutional Reform and organized a rally at UAB to support constitutional and tax reform. She also founded the UAB Students for Higher Education Reform organization. Following graduation in May 2004 Jones plans to pursue a law degree and a master’s in public policy.
Mary Jones works as a community service coordinator for Greater Birmingham Ministries and supervisor of the AmeriCorps VISTA Project. She has assisted homeless women and taught parenting skills to young mothers. She also has been a member of numerous boards and committees, including Operation New Birmingham Community Affairs Committee, Children’s Defense Fund, the Southern Rural Black Women’s Initiative Task Force, Minority Business Training and Development Committee, Urban Ministry Board, Alabama ARISE and World of Opportunity.
