Posted on September 24, 2002 at 4:10 p.m. BIRMINGHAM, AL — Eli Capilouto, former dean of UAB’s School of Public Health, has been named interim provost effective October 1. UAB President Carol Z. Garrison made the announcement today. Capilouto succeeds Arol Augsburger, who has been named president of the Illinois College of Optometry. “Dr. Capilouto has all the qualities we sought in this important position,” Garrison said. “He is highly regarded on campus as a visionary leader who exercises good judgment, fairness and consensus-building to move organizations forward. His understanding of UAB is both broad and deep. He’s a great addition to the team, and he will do a superb job.” “I’ve been at UAB my entire professional career and it is an honor to be able to return service to this university which means so much to me,” Capilouto said. “I look forward to working with Carol Garrison, our deans and faculty, so that together we can keep UAB on an upward course.” From 1994 to 2001, while Capilouto was dean, the school undertook innovative budgeting, management, evaluation and reward policies. While the school’s faculty ranks remained level, active grant support quadrupled from $6 to nearly $24 million. New research began in genetics, health policy and community-based interventions. To improve the preparation of public health practitioners, the school also introduced the first team-taught, case-based, integrated public health curriculum in an accredited school of public health. Capilouto has had a long association with UAB, where he earned graduate degrees in dentistry and public health. He received a doctorate in health policy and management from Harvard, where he received a Robert Wood Johnson Dental Scholars Award, a National Center for Health Services Research Fellowship, and the Charles Wilinsky Award for academic achievement. From 1989 to 1994 he served in various capacities at UAB, including appointments in the schools of Dentistry and Public Health, the Center for Aging and the Lister Hill Center for Health Policy. After stepping down as dean last year, he has remained on the faculty pursuing his research interests. Capilouto has served as a referee and editor for many professional journals. He was a member of the Pew Health Professions Advisory Panel for Dentistry and has served as a consultant to the National Academy of Sciences Institute of Medicine and the American Association of Academic Health Centers. Capilouto is active in local volunteer organizations, serving as president of Temple Emanu-El and on the boards of the YMCA and Ronald McDonald House. In 2002 he was appointed to a five-year term on the Mt. Brook City Schools Board of Education. Downloadable ImageTo save images from your browser window, follow these directions:
