BIRMINGHAM, AL — Marc Booker recently was named director of student housing and residential life at UAB (University of Alabama at Birmingham). Booker comes to UAB from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, where he was director of university housing and director of contract services 1998-2002.

UAB has more than 1,400 students living in five residence halls, including the new state-of-the-art Blount Hall.

“UAB is an exciting place to be right now,” Booker said. “Total fall 2002 enrollment increased by 6 percent over last year to 15,579, and the average age of our freshman this year is 18.8 years. Student life has never been more active. Recognizing that campus housing is an integral part of the recruiting and retention efforts on any campus, we want to build the student housing program at UAB up to a level where we can attract and retain the very best students. Our goal is to provide our residents with the optimal living environment in which they can pursue their academic interests and engage in all UAB has to offer.

“The university is very in tune with what today’s students are looking for. Our educational and research opportunities and location right in the heart of the state’s largest city give us tremendous appeal to today’s college students. And with initiatives like the campus recreation center that will be built on the site of the Garden Apartments, between south 15th and 16th streets along University Boulevard, we will be even more attractive.”

Booker is a native of Alabama. He earned his bachelor’s degree in marketing and liberal arts in 1993 from Spring Hill College and his master’s in industrial/organizational psychology in 1997 from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. He was resident director at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga 1993-1995 and then housing manager 1995-1998.

He is a member of the South Eastern Association of Housing Officers (SEAHO), Association for College and University Housing Officers-International (ACUHO-I), National Association of College Auxiliary Services (NACAS) and the Association for College Administration Professionals (ACAP). He received the Chancellor’s Institutional Effectiveness Award and the Distinguished Service Award from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.
