W. Timothy Garvey, M.D., has been named chair of the department of nutrition sciences in the School of Health Related Professions at UAB (University of Alabama at Birmingham).

BIRMINGHAM, AL — W. Timothy Garvey, M.D., has been named chair of the department of nutrition sciences in the School of Health Related Professions at UAB (University of Alabama at Birmingham). He previously was the director of the division of endocrinology, diabetes, and medical genetics at the Medical University of South Carolina. He will begin his duties at UAB in April of 2003.

“Dr. Garvey brings a wealth of clinical and research experience to the department,” says Harold Jones, Ph.D., dean of the School of Health Related Professions. “His cutting edge work in diabetes and obesity ranges from basic molecular genetics to clinical trials research. His work both complements and expands the scope of our world-class nutrition research program, and his strong clinical background will help us further develop the clinical services offered by the department.”

Garvey earned his medical degree from St. Louis University School of Medicine in 1978 and underwent residency training at Barnes Hospital at the Washington University School of Medicine. He was a clinical and research fellow at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center and the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine. He has served on the faculty of the University of California, San Diego, the University of Indiana and the Medical University of South Carolina.

The department of nutrition sciences at UAB was ranked 2nd nationally by U.S. News and World Report in its latest ranking of nutrition programs. The department is also second in National Institute of Health (NIH) research funding among all nutrition sciences departments.

The UAB School of Health Related Professions has 20 academic programs at the baccalaureate, masters, and doctoral degree levels within six departments: critical care, diagnostic care and therapeutic services, health services administration, nutrition sciences, occupational therapy and physical therapy.
