WHAT: | UAB’s Civitan International Research Center is holding a six-week Summer Treatment Program for children ages 6 to 12 with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and other related behavior disorders such as Oppositional Defiant Disorder. The program, the first of its kind in Alabama and one of only six in the country, is a comprehensive approach to treatment provided in a therapeutic summer day camp setting. Bart Hodgens, Ph.D., UAB clinical child psychologist, directs the program.
WHEN: | June 28 to August 6, 2004
WHERE: | The Redmont School
MORE: | The camp enrolls 24 children who are divided into two groups of 12 each. Each group of students spends three hours a day in classroom sessions — art, computer lab and academics. The rest of day, kids participate in recreational activities, like soccer and softball. Throughout the day, a variety of behavioral treatments tailored to the specific needs of each child are integrated into activities. These include social and problem solving discussions, time out, daily report cards, reward systems and weekly parent education meetings. The Summer Treatment Program will be conducted annually.
