UAB Nurse Researcher Appointed to National Post

Joyce Giger, Ed.D., professor of nursing with the University of Alabama School of Nursing at UAB, has been appointed by U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Tommy Thompson to serve on the National Advisory Council for Nursing Research, which is responsible for recommending the approval and funding of research proposals. Giger will serve in this position until Jan. 31, 2007. A nurse researcher, Giger's expertise is in health promotion strategies for culturally diverse populations. Her most recent research focuses on risk reduction activities among pre-menopausal African-American women. She has held several national positions related to cultural diversity, health policy and community and long-term care issues.

UAB Pediatrician Named 2003 Young Investigator

Dr. Aleta Bonner, assistant professor of pediatric emergency medicine with UAB and Children's Hospital, recently received the 2003 Young Investigator Award — a plaque and $400 — from the Southern Society for Pediatric Research. The award recognizes the merit and originality of Bonner's submitted research project as well as her ability to clearly present and respond to questions regarding the work. The award was presented by the organization during its 2003 annual meeting held in New Orleans. Dr. Kathy Monroe, associate professor of pediatric emergency medicine with UAB and Children's Hospital, was Bonner's sponsor.

UAB Pediatric Fellow Wins Top Honors

Dr. David Spiro, a fellow with the department of pediatric emergency medicine at UAB and Children's Hospital, is the 2003 recipient of the Ludwig/Seidel Award for Best Scientific Presentation by an Emergency Medicine Fellow presented by the Ambulatory Pediatric Association. He is also the recipient of a Clinical Research Award presented by the Society for Pediatric Research. Both awards were presented during the Pediatric Academic Societies' Annual Meeting held May 3-6 in Seattle, Washington. Spiro is a resident of Hoover, Alabama.
