Associate Professor John J. Sloan III, Ph.D., has been named interim chairman of the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Department of Justice Sciences. Sloan’s appointment is effective July 1. He will step in for Professor Brent Smith, Ph.D., who is retiring from UAB after 25 years of service.

BIRMINGHAM, AL — Associate Professor John J. Sloan III, Ph.D., has been named interim chairman of the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Department of Justice Sciences. Sloan’s appointment is effective July 1. He will step in for Professor Brent Smith, Ph.D., who is retiring from UAB after 25 years of service.

Sloan is director of the department’s Masters Program in Criminal Justice. His research has focused on crime, victimization, criminal justice policy and specialized juvenile courts such as gun and drug courts. His research has been funded by local, state and federal agencies.

Sloan earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in sociology and criminal justice from Eastern Michigan University in 1980 and 1982 respectively. He earned his doctorate in sociology from Purdue University in 1987.

Sloan has taught at UAB since 1988.
