BIRMINGHAM, AL - The UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center Supporters will climax their current fundraising effort by hosting Gala 2003 on Saturday, February 22, 7-10 p.m., at The Kirklin Clinic at UAB, 2000 6th Avenue South. The formal event, now in its 17th year, has become a tradition of the winter season in Birmingham.

This year, the Supporters have a goal of $500,000 for expanding the Center's cancer metastasis research program and providing high-priority patient/family services. One quarter of the money raised will support these services, which include amenities associated with compassionate care for all patients, as well as affordable lodging, prescription drugs, transportation, and financial assistance for patients in need.

The major portion of funds raised will provide start-up funds for recently recruited researcher, Dr. Dan Welch, who is nationally known for his investigations into genetic factors responsible for the spread of cancer. He and the 312 other Cancer Center physicians and scientists will be honored guests at Gala 2003, featuring the theme "Stars Fell on Alabama."

Last year, the Supporters exceeded their goal by raising $625,000. Over the years, the volunteer group has raised more than $5 million for the UAB Cancer Center.

Jeanie MacKenzie is chairing Gala 2003. Arlen Carpenter Jr. is fundraising committee chairman, and Callen Sparrow is co-chairman. Helen Pardue is president of the Supporters. Community Affairs Director Sandy Gilmour is Cancer Center staff coordinator. For Information, call (205) 975-7424. A contribution of $75 per person entitles the donor to a Gala invitation. Special recognition levels of giving begin at $500.

Gala 2003 will offer a buffet catered by Annette Weaver and will feature the music of Brian Lutterbie with Maxx Groove.
