The Board of Trustees of the University of Alabama system has named James E. Johnson, M.D., professor of medicine in the Division of Pulmonary, Allergy and Critical Care at UAB (University of Alabama at Birmingham), inaugural holder of the Charles and Alice Hohenberg Professorship in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine. Johnson, who joined UAB in 2000 after a 20-year career in the U.S. Army Medical Corps, was named director of UAB’s Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU) last January. The MICU was named in honor of the Hohenbergs in 1978, in recognition of their financial assistance in equipping the unit.

BIRMINGHAM, AL — The Board of Trustees of the University of Alabama system has named James E. Johnson, M.D., professor of medicine in the Division of Pulmonary, Allergy and Critical Care at UAB (University of Alabama at Birmingham), inaugural holder of the Charles and Alice Hohenberg Professorship in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine. Johnson, who joined UAB in 2000 after a 20-year career in the U.S. Army Medical Corps, was named director of UAB’s Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU) last January. The MICU was named in honor of the Hohenbergs in 1978, in recognition of their financial assistance in equipping the unit.

“Dr. Johnson has energized the educational, clinical and research programs associated with the UAB MICU,” said K. Randall Young, Jr. M.D., director of the Division of Pulmonary, Allergy and Critical Care Medicine. “Since his arrival on campus, Jim Johnson has become one of the most effective clinical leaders and educators in the Department of Medicine.”

Johnson received his medical degree from the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in 1980. Before retiring as an Army colonel, he served from 1980 to 2000 at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas. He has been selected as one of the Department of Medicine’s Top Ten Teachers during each of the past four academic years. He is board certified in internal medicine, pulmonary disease and critical care medicine.
