BIRMINGHAM, AL — Bryan D. Noe, Ph.D., interim dean of the graduate school at Emory University, has been named dean of the UAB Graduate School. Noe will join UAB November 1. He has been interim dean of the graduate school at Emory since June 2003.
“Dr. Noe has a tremendous tradition of working with exemplary graduate programs,” UAB Provost Eli Capilouto said. “He has a vast experience within interdisciplinary programs, which are a hallmark of UAB. His efforts have been very important in the growth of graduate programs because of this interdisciplinary focus.
“The work of the search committee, headed by Huw Thomas, dean of the Dental School, did a fabulous job of seeking out, recruiting and attracting the best possible candidate for this position. I also have to thank Dr. Jim McClintock, who has served as interim dean of the graduate school and made clear from the outset that he would not accept the position if offered on a permanent basis. He is anxious to return to his research.”
Noe has served in a variety of capacities at Emory since joining the university as an assistant professor of anatomy in 1972. In 1977, he was promoted to associate professor before becoming professor of Anatomy and Cell Biology (later renamed Cell Biology) in 1983.
He directed graduate studies for the department from 1977 to 1991, when he became director of the graduate division of biological and biomedical sciences, a position he held until 2003.
Noe’s research focuses on the mechanisms by which cells in living organisms make protein hormones by processing larger precursors into smaller products that regulate biological processes. He is the author or co-author of more than 100 journal articles, book chapters and papers presented at scientific meetings.
“I am looking forward to joining the outstanding faculty and administrators at UAB,” Noe said. “UAB has had a remarkable pattern of growth in its comparatively short existence as an academic institution. I believe that there are already many exciting opportunities for prospective students to obtain a superb graduate education at UAB. I hope to be able to work effectively with faculty and administrators to build upon and expand those opportunities. It is truly an honor to be chosen to lead the Graduate School at UAB.”
