Two University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Honors Program students have won Fulbright Scholarships to study in Europe later this year. Posted on April 24, 2007 at 10:20 a.m.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Two University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Honors Program students have won Fulbright Scholarships to study in Europe later this year.

The UAB Honors Program, under the direction of Psychology Professor Michael Sloane, Ph.D., provides gifted and highly motivated students with an intimate, innovative and challenging, interdisciplinary course of study.

Tarannum Jaleel, 20, a native of Huntsville, won a Fulbright scholarship to Ireland where she will conduct research at the European Institute for Women’s Health in Dublin. While in Dublin, she plans to develop a culturally sensitive information packet on women’s reproductive health that targets Muslim and Hindu women. Jaleel is a senior majoring in physics. She will study in Dublin during the 2007-2008 academic year.

Jaleel was named as the Most Outstanding Student in Biophysics for 2007 at UAB. She also has been admitted to the UAB Early Medical School Acceptance Program.

Jaleel is a 2004 graduate of Grissom High School. She is the daughter of Dr. Mohammad Abdul Jaleel and Dr. Vijaya Lakshmi Jaleel of Birmingham.

Stephanie Hirst, 22, of Killen, won a Fulbright scholarship to Germany where she will work as a research intern at the Institute of Organic Chemistry at Justus-Liebig University in Gieβen. Working under the guidance of Peter R. Schreiner, Ph.D., Hirst will study the mechanisms and chemistry involved in organocatalysis via computational methods. She will study in Germany during the 2007-2008 academic year.

Hirst is a senior majoring in chemistry with a concentration in biochemistry. In addition to the UAB Honors Program, she also is a member of the UAB Department of Chemistry’s Honors Program. She received the department’s award for freshman academic excellence in 2004. In 2006 she was honored for Outstanding Achievement in German.

Hirst is a 2003 graduate of Brooks High School. She is the daughter of Laurie and David Hirst of Killen.

Established in 1946, the Fulbright program, sponsored by the U.S. State Department, aims to increase mutual understanding between people in the United States and other countries, through the exchange of people, knowledge and skills.
