BIRMINGHAM, AL — University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) education Professor Maryann Manning, Ed.D., of Birmingham has been selected for the 2005 Special Service Award from the International Reading Association (IRE). IRE is a membership organization of literacy professionals.

Manning will receive the award during the organization’s annual banquet in San Antonio, Texas on May 4. The award is given to honor individuals who have provided unusual and distinguished service to the association.

Manning specializes in reading education and literacy. She teaches in the UAB School of Education’s Department of Curriculum and Instruction. She has been a member of the UAB faculty since 1972.
