BIRMINGHAM, AL — The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) School of Business and the UAB National Alumni Society honored four outstanding alumni at the school’s fifth annual Outstanding Alumni Awards Luncheon Friday, April 28, at The Club. The honorees, accomplished in their respective fields, were Honorary Alumnus Rodger D. Overton, Outstanding Alumnus James W. “Wes” Smith, Outstanding Alumna Patti Hendrix Lovoy, Outstanding Young Alumnus Preston D. McSwain.
About the Honorees
Rodger D. Overton, executive vice president and chief information officer for AmSouth Bank, oversees all of AmSouth’s corporate computing resources. Since joining the company in 1974, he has worked in treasury management, check processing and information technology. He was named to his current position in 2004. Overton is a member of the UAB Information System’s Advisory Council.
James W. “Wes” Smith has been executive vice president and chief operating officer for Mayer Electric Supply Company Inc. of Birmingham since 2002. The company has 850 associates in 54 locations. In addition to serving on Mayer’s Board of Directors, he has served on UAB’s Information Systems Advisory Board and the Lithonia Lighting Distributor Advisory Council. He earned his M.B.A. from the UAB School of Business in 1997.
Patti Hendrix Lovoy is director of business operations for Southern Living magazine, where she oversees the financial management of Southern Progress Corporation (SPC) Custom Publishing and Southern Living Homes group, including House Plans Operation, Idea House Program and Custom Builder Program. Her former positions include general manager of SPC Custom Publishing, general manager of Progressive Farmer magazine and business manager of Southern Living. She received her bachelor of science in business administration with marketing concentration, with honors, from UAB in 1979 and earned her M.B.A. from UAB in 2000.
Preston D. McSwain is senior vice President of Neuberger Berman Private Asset Management in Boston. He advises clients coordinating an integrated wealth plan across both liquid and illiquid assets and is responsible for fiduciary management and client service for Neuberger’s high-net-worth investment management and trust clients in New England. He has been a frequent speaker on investment management, asset allocation and trust issues. In 1989, McSwain earned his bachelor of science degree in finance with a concentration in investment management from UAB.
